Frodo’s Tenacity
Lessons for Challenging Times from Lord of the Rings
Monday, November 16
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Lake Villa District Library
AS Program Room A/BJim Gould and Ted Hazelgrove explore how hope and friendship sustain Frodo’s determination, and enable us to reflect on their place in our own quest to live resiliently in challenging times.
ADULTS (ages 18 and up)
J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings portrays an epic quest in which, in addition to military might, personal character and social relationships are central to the success of good over evil. Frodo Baggins is a hobbit who inherits an evil ring, undertakes the challenge to destroy it and saves Middle-earth. This presentation examines how hope and friendship sustain Frodo’s determination, and enables us to reflect on their place in our own quest to live resiliently in challenging times.
Jim Gould and Ted Hazelgrove team taught classes in Ethics and Literature at McHenry County College, Crystal Lake, for 20 years. They have published a number of academic articles—including on Lord of the Rings—and have presented community programs for several years.
